Byron is a contemporary community with a welcoming rustic quality that creates a beautiful balance of tradition and forward-thinking culture. It is probably best known as the location of the Byron Nuclear Generating Station and is situated in Byron Township, alongside the Rock River. The population is approximately 4,000 and the town calls itself "The Gateway to the Rock River Valley.” Byron is attractive for families due to its closeness to big cities like Rockford but the town still feels like a great place to raise kids because of the hometown ambiance and slower pace that we expect from Midwestern towns. Kids will be riding bikes in the summertime and sledding in the winter. Tree lined streets remind us of a bygone time.
They have an award winning golf course where many residents and visitors enjoy spending their weekends in the pretty seasons. There is also a beautiful river front where locals gather to fish, picnic and just enjoy nature. The town’s excellent schools are a great selling point for parents looking for a safe and community-centered hometown for their kids. 12 miles south of Rockford, however, the commute to the “big city” from this small town is more than manageable.
Those who enjoy being outdoors will be absolutely thrilled to find themselves in this part of Illinois. The nearby town of Belvidere runs parks including Spencer Park & Belvidere Municipal Park. They are also known as the "City of Murals", because of its many murals. It is a great place to spend a day outside on a lovely spring or summer day. Like so many towns in the area, Belvidere and Byron understand the value of local history and culture and love and cherish nature and the amazing natural landscapes with which they have been graced. You certainly get the sense that they cherish their small and safe communities here in this part of Illinois.
